Qualifications and Duties for Executive Director
Qualifications for the position of Executive Director of the Scottsboro-Jackson Heritage Center: Seeking a well-qualified applicant who possesses knowledge related to historic preservation, knowledgeable of local Jackson County history, knowledgeable and proficient in genealogy research. Applicant to demonstrate strong public relations, excellent communication skills for effective interaction with the media and Museum Board members, proficient computer literacy, social media and website development/management, and strong managerial (financial and organizational management) and administrative skills necessary for the supervision of the daily operations of the Scottsboro-Jackson Heritage Center.
General Duties of the Executive Director of the Scottsboro-Jackson Heritage Center
Work with the Scottsboro Museum Board and various committees in operating a local museum and cultural center.
Direct the daily operations of the Center to include but not limited to the checking and response to e-mail, phone calls and messages, requests for information, and development and maintenance of Scottsboro –Jackson Heritage Center websites and social media. Help with genealogy research. Supervise part-time employee(s).
Responsible for timely mailings to promote membership of the Scottsboro-Jackson Heritage Center, and all other pertinent correspondence pertaining to the social and historical activities of the Heritage Center.
Responsible for the receipt and cataloging of collections, as per board established procedures.
Responsible for overseeing and coordinating the upkeep and maintenance of all grounds, buildings, and improvements. Present needs and improvements for Board approval prior to obligating the Board financially for any such improvements and prior to commencing any proposed work.
Supervise and train volunteer staff.
Prepare and present yearly recommended budget to Board for consideration no later than the July monthly meeting and submit Annual Report summarizing the activities from the previous calendar year and proposed activities for the current calendar year in accordance with the By-Laws of the Museum Commission of the City of Scottsboro, Alabama
Work with the Treasurer of the Museum Board to oversee the deposit of all monies received, make investments as approved by the Board and use available funds of the Board to make payment of all its legal bills. Expenditures of funds for other than regular reoccurring monthly expenditures for the Heritage Center will require, at the minimum, the approval of the Treasurer or if the Treasurer is not available, the President of the Scottsboro Museum Commission. Such expenditures will require a second party signature on the check.
Submit required documentation of revenues and expenditures for the month to the approved accounting office for preparation of monthly financial reports to submit to the Board. Attend all meetings of the Scottsboro Museum Board.
Prepare materials and presentations for the monthly Museum Board meeting.
Planning, preparation, and implementation of educational and cultural programs that support positive community focus on the cultural and historical history of the area and the Scottsboro-Jackson Heritage Center.
Coordinate and provide supervision of all rentals or other events held in the Exhibit Hall and Brown Proctor House as required. Attend and participate in Heritage Center sponsored events. Must be willing to work occasional weekends for Board sponsored functions and for after-hours/weekend rental events.
Submit applications for grants and to other sources for funding requests with approval from the Museum Board.
Assume any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Museum Board.
